1973 Fender Precision Bass "Charlie Brown"

Story goes, this bass was built for a traveling luggage salesman and travelled with him to all 48 contiguous US states. The case is custom made by the luggage company for this specific bass and is SUPER cool. It has some hilariously awesome mods including Charlie Brown, and is one of the best playing P basses we have had through the shop!

Weight: 9.3lbs

Case: Hardshell Case

Year: 1973

Cosmetic Condition: Good - We recently purchased this bass from a collection.  Although there is nothing wrong with the bass at all, due to the modifications that have been made cosmetically we are listing this bass as good condition.  It was customized years ago by it's original owner.  Bass has general wear throughout from years of use.  There are also some eyelet screws that have been installed in the back of the bass to use as DIY strap locks via belt. Bass comes with a belt strap that will work for this purpose.  The pick guard is leather and was custom made at some point for the bass.  Please see our listing photos to get a detailed look at this bass.

SETUP & INSPECTED BY OUR LUTHIER

Tech Notes: This bass plays so well, medium/low, comfortable and little buzz even when digging.  The neck angle is spot on and the action is playing at 6/64" on the low E and 5/64" on the high G, radiused across the saddles.  New D'Addario 45-100 XL strings.  There is quite a bit of fret wear in the first few positions, and it looks like the high frets may have been leveled and never crowned.  Hilariously, this bass plays and sounds great regardless of the frets and the overall condition.  Tuners were stiff, but move quite well after oiling. High G tuner is bent pretty well but works fine.  Electronics were cleaned but just a little crackle mainly on the tone, otherwise function perfectly.  The saddle height screws were seized, but after cleaning, lubing and replacing one broken screw (made a screw for it, broken old one in case). That being said, all saddles move up and down fine and intonate perfectly with the addition of a little extra spring material.  Truss rod adjusts perfectly and the relief is at .010".  I briefly touched up the fret ends and cleaned the fretboard. We did remove the leather guard to replace the pickup foam so the pickups can be adjusted. The pickup does not look original, however the rest of the electronics do otherwise.  We are unsure what the pickup is but it sound REALLY GREAT.  The potentiometers code date to 1973.  Underneath the pickguard we did notice the holes for a tug bar, which should indicate 1973. Lastly, the neck is stamped Herb G. But the date cannot be made out, but based on the neck profile, headstock decal and the serial on the heel and pot codes clearly indicate 1973. See additional detailed photos below.
